An electromagnetic separator is an industrial device that uses an electrically generated magnetic field to remove ferrous metal contaminants from non-magnetic bulk materials.
Working Principle
- Energizing: Direct current (DC) passes through an internal copper or aluminum coil to create a powerful magnetic field.
- Extraction: As raw materials pass underneath, iron contaminants (like nails, bolts, or tramp iron) are instantly lifted and held against the magnet face.
- Discharge: Captured metals are removed from the product stream either automatically or by turning off the power to kill the magnetic field.
Key Types
- Self-Cleaning (Overband): Features a moving belt around the magnet that automatically flings trapped metal into a collection bin. Best for high-volume, continuous production.
- Manual Cleaning (Suspended Block): Hangs statically over a conveyor. Operators must periodically turn off the power to let the accumulated metal drop. Best for low-iron environments.
- Wet/Dry Matrix Filters: High-intensity systems (up to 20,000 Gauss) used to clean liquid slurries or fine powders, such as lithium battery materials or ceramics.
